If you’re new to the concept of Fry Words, let’s start with a brief introduction. Fry Words were developed by Dr. Edward Fry in the 1950s as a list of the most commonly used words in the English language. The list was created to help children and adults improve their reading fluency. For example, consider how frequently words like “the,” “and,” and “it” appear in any text—mastering these can significantly boost reading speed and confidence. With a total of 1,000 words, divided into groups of 100, Fry Words are essential building blocks for developing reading skills, especially for young learners. Including visuals like flashcard examples can make these words even more engaging.
Helping your child become a fluent reader begins with building a strong foundation in sight words—and Fry Sight Words are a powerful way to do just that. These high-frequency words appear again and again in reading material, making them essential for children to recognize instantly.
To support you in this learning journey, we’ve created a FREE PDF of Fry Sight Words for each set of 100 words suitable for class wise learning.

The Purpose of Fry Words
Fry Words are designed to help students master the words they are most likely to encounter in reading and writing. These high-frequency words make up a significant portion of the text children read. By focusing on Fry Words, educators ensure that students can quickly decode and understand essential words, reducing cognitive load and allowing them to focus on comprehension.
Sheet 1: Fry Sight Words 1-100
The first 100 Fry Words are perfect for introducing to kindergarten and first-grade students. These words include basic, everyday terms like “the,” “and,” and “it.” Use this sheet during the early months of kindergarten, emphasizing repetition and fun activities such as flashcards and matching games to make learning engaging.
Sheet 2: Fry Sight Words 101-200
Once students are comfortable with the first 100 words, transition to the next 100. Typically, this set is ideal for late kindergarten or early first grade. Words in this group, such as “because,” “very,” and “little,” are slightly more challenging and require students to develop a deeper understanding of context.
Sheet 3: Fry Sight Words 201-300
The third sheet introduces more complex words like “different,” “important,” and “close.” These are excellent for second-grade students or advanced first graders who have a good grasp of the initial sets. Encourage students to use these words in sentences to reinforce their understanding.
Very First Sight Words Sentences Level – 1
After completing Very First Sight Words and Sentences Level – 1, children can smoothly move on to Level – 2 for the next stage of their reading journey. While Level 1 introduces the first 55 most-used sight words with simple sentences and colourful visuals, Level 2 expands on this foundation by continuing with another set of 55 high-frequency words and guiding children into basic sentence building. Both books share the same engaging design, fun star-colouring activities, and bright illustrations, but Level 2 takes things a step further by improving vocabulary, strengthening spelling, and developing communication skills.
